SPIN Media is excited to announce that SPIN Play, the groundbreaking music app for iPad co-developed by SPIN and Bottle Rocket Apps, has won Advertising Age’s Media Vanguard Award forBest Music Integration in a Tablet Edition.
The Media Vanguard Awards, now in its second year, honor publishers and broadcasters that are finding innovative, technology-driven means to extend their franchises and connect with audiences in new ways. SPIN Play launched in March 2011 as a new concept in music discovery for the iPad, and has since been featured in Apple’s App Store Hall of Fame and in Apple’s television commercial for the iPad 2—something no other magazine publisher has done to date.
“We’re extremely honored to accept this award,” said Devin Pedzwater, SPIN Brand Creative Director. “We always had a clear vision for SPIN Play that didn’t involve just reformatting the magazine or website for the iPad, but rather focused on finding new ways for our audience to access music. It’s thrilling to be recognized by the industry for that—not least of all because SPIN Play is only the beginning of what we have planned for the SPIN brand.”
SPIN Play’s monthly premium editions offer 50-plus streaming songs and 30-plus streaming videos, curated by SPIN’s editorial team, as well as content from the magazine using Bottle Rocket’s Issue Publisher platform for publishers, and other exclusive packages. Users can seamlessly listen to songs while reading articles, create personalized playlists and listen to them while using other apps, and even stream them wirelessly to any compatible stereo or docking station via Apple’s AirPlay technology.
SPIN Play was part of the recent iOS 5 launch as one of the first publishers to fully support Newsstand. In the week following the launch of Newsstand, SPIN Play saw 648 percent more subscriptions sold than the previous ten weeks.
“SPIN Play is known as the example in the industry for what a magazine should be on iPad,” said Calvin Carter, Founder and President of Bottle Rocket Apps. “This wasn’t by chance. It is a wonderful combination of beautiful design, compelling content and precise execution, born from a commitment to the highest quality standards in the industry.”
Later this month, SPIN Play will receive a major update to provide a rich and complete experience for low-vision and blind users by taking full advantage of Apple’s Universal Access capabilities of the iPad 2.
In 2012, SPIN.com is set to follow up on the groundbreaking aesthetic innovations of SPIN Play, with an ambitious initiative to make SPIN’s online user experience more immediate and immersive. In the past year, SPIN.com has doubled its monthly unique users and tripled its monthly page views. SPIN’s digital approach also incorporates the SPIN Network, a hand-selected collection of 32 partner websites, including Hipster Runoff, 8tracks, Pretty Much Amazing, and Indie Shuffle, which brings SPIN’s reach to 5.5 million monthly unique visitors in total.
SPIN Play for iPad™ is a new concept in music discovery from SPIN. The app is free to download and includes a steady feed of news and reviews delivered directly from SPIN.com. The monthly premium editions offer 50-plus streaming songs and 30-plus streaming videos—curated by SPIN’s editors—as well as the kind of forward-thinking, authoritative editorial content and stunning photography on which SPIN has built its brand.
