AT&T Replaces Unlimited Data Plan with 2GB/Per Month Cap, Adds Tethering Option

You didn’t think it would last, did you? I did too, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end. Effective June 7th, AT&T’s unlimited data plan for iPads and iPhones will be replaced by two other plans. DataPlus ($15/mo.), the entry level plan provides 200mb of data, while DataPro ($25/mo.), the premium-level plan restricts you to a 2GB data cap. Furthermore, if you want to include tethering, that’s an additional $20/mo. option.

We’ve stirred the pot before regarding AT&T and iPhone tethering but the company seems to continuously avoid the feature due to the increase in data usage that would occur. AT&T issued a statement today to Engadget regarding tethering on the iPhone and the results are as we expected… don’t count on it any time soon.

I am sure some of you have been wondering whether or not the new iPad will be able to tether with the iPhone. Well according to Steve Jobs himself, who made the brief announcement in response to an emailed question from Swedish record producer Jezper Söderlund you will not be able to tether your iPad and iPhone together.

Droid Tethering Plan for an Additional $30

Today Verizon announced that Droid users will be able to add tethering to their plan for an additional $30 per month. This will be in addition to your existing data plan. Tethering plans will be limited to 5GB of data. So that is roughly $60 per month for data. The Droid tethering plan will not be available until sometime in 2010.

EXCLUSIVE: We originally brought you the story last month stating MMS and tethering would be coming in July. AT&T responded directly to our story and stated it would be delayed. Well those stories are true as MMS and tethering are now coming in September. The controversy over tethering pricing remains the same. The latest 1.3 update of Firemint’s game Flight Control allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to tether their phones together via a Bluetooth connection and compete against one another in multiplayer action within the game. EXCLUSIVE: A source with AT&T informed Appmodo today that MMS for the iPhone will be coming mid July, not “the end of the summer” as previously reported. The highly anticipated tethering option will also be delivered towards the end of July with pricing around $55 per month, not $70 as suspected across the net.
