2Do Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

If there is one category of apps in the App Store of which there is no shortage, it’s ToDo apps. A search of “To Do” or “ToDo” in the App Store will turn up hundreds of results on multiple pages. It’s amazing how many different takes of a ToDo list are possible. From dead simple to so complex it takes more time use than to get your tasks done, it’s there. I’ve always wondered why Apple didn’t include some type of ToDo app on the iPhone that would sync with iCal. 2Do from Guidedways is trying to fill that void.

Review

2Do has a a lot to offer. I was really looking forward to trying this app that offered something I couldn’t find in any other ToDo app on the App Store. Sync with iCal. How does it deliver? Very well. It syncs with your Mac over a WiFi network and worked perfectly the first time I tried it. 2Do offers tons of great features. Such as:

  • Tabbed Calendars- Group related ToDos under their respective Calendars.
  • Drag & Drop- Move a ToDo from one calendar to another.
  • Expanded View- Concentrate on what you need to and see your ToDos in full width.
iCal Sync- Keep 2Do synced with your Mac over Wi-Fi.
  • Push and Email Alarms- Get notified when you want, the way you want.
ToDo Sharing-Share ToDos with your co-workers by email.
  • Repeating Tasks- Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly or Customized.
    And many many more.

I was blown away with all the options in this app. It has tons of ways to customize it’s appearance and functionality. The down side to many ToDo apps that offer this much customization and functionality is they tend to be difficult to use and frustrating. Not so with 2Do. It remains easy to use, enjoyable even. You can change the theme, font size, font style and more.

Need a reminder for you task? Would you like that via email, push notification, or alarm? 2Do can do any or all of them for your task. You can even schedule you alerts by date and time.

Reoccurring ToDos are easy to set up with just enough options. Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly are all options along with setting it for the same day of the week or any given time period,

Within seconds I set up a ToDo that would sent me a push notification at 7:00 PM on the 23rd of every month reminding me to give the dog his flea medication.

The only really negative thing to me was the lack of sync with Exchange, which the developer says is coming it a future update along with support for tags and projects.

The UI is beautiful, easy to navigate and a joy to work with.

Tips

The developer’s Website offers up 12 tips for becoming a power user, these are shorts cuts to working with the app. Among my favorites are

1. Swipe-Done- Though there are three ways to mark a ToDo as done; Swiping is always the fastest way. To Swipe-Done a ToDo, simply swipe across a row from either direction and the ToDo will jump into the Done icon or get crossed-out depending on the settings.

2. Drag & Drop- Tap and Hold on a ToDo then start dragging when options appear, Drop it on any calendar to tie it to that calendar. You can also drop it on the special “Today” calendar to set it’s due date to today.

3. Show Full Details- Tap a ToDo to bring Detail view immediately, where you can edit any property in a dedicated sub view. You can also share ToDos from this view.

Recommendation

I had really high hopes for this app and it over delivered in every category. I’m pretty picky about what apps stay on my iPhone. Especially those that are for productivity. It’s rare that an app I try lives on my iphone after I’m done testing it. 2Do will be staying on my home screen. It gets my highest recommendation. It sells for $5.99 and is available through the App Store right now. There is also a free lite version that lets you try it out before you buy.
