2XL Fleet Defense Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

Do you have what it takes to protect your aircraft carrier and its crew against whatever your enemy may throw your way? In 2XL Fleet Defense for the iPhone and iPod Touch, you are the sole aviator tasked with defending the ship from endless attacks that seem to come from all different directions.

2XL Fleet Defense plays similar to Flight Control and Harbor Master. According to the game’s story, with the threat of a nuclear attack, millions of lives are hanging by what you do out at sea. The world watches your every move as you are placed behind the controls of an advanced jet fighter ready to defend the carrier and crew as you are thwart attacks coming from all directions.

You are given 2D, top-down perspective of the playing field. Your carrier will appear in the middle of the screen as your enemy, in the form of fighters, bombers and ships, comes bearing down on your ship from all sides. To help you along, you have radar, located on the top right hand of the screen, which detects the proximity of your enemy, thus enabling you to determine which one to shoot down first.

Unlike Flight Control, instead of drawing lines to plot the course of your fighter, you scroll around the playfield and simply tap on an enemy target and your fighter will take the fastest intercept course. When your plane is close enough to the enemy, it will automatically fires a missile to destroy the target. Once your missiles leave the jet, you can move on to the next target.

The carrier can only take so many hits from the enemy before sinking, but it can heal itself while your fighter is on deck (tapping the carrier will land your plane). As a last measure of defense, your carrier is loaded with a powerful defense system called the Phalanx. This weapon will shoot a barrage of bullets in all directions, but take note; this system is very slow to charge and must only be used in an extreme emergency.

2XL Fleet Defense provides great graphics with a background music and game noise which is reminiscent of the Top Gun and the Hunt for Red October days gone by. The game also includes an achievement system and online leaderboards.

Recommendation
2XL Fleet Defense is recommended for fans of the Flight Control and Harbor Master series. This is an addicting and challenging management game for kids of all ages. It is available now at the iTunes App Store for $1.99.
