I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned my lack of racing game experience before. I guess that’s something I’m going to have to remedy, because Rally Master Pro, from Fish Labs makes me think I’ve been missing out on an awful lot of fun.
Review
Rally Master Pro offers three levels of rallies: amateur, professional, and expert; with 27 different tracks, there’s enough to keep you entertained for quite a while. Each race starts with a weather report, which affects road conditions, thanks to the advanced physics engine. Rain, sunshine, and clouds, as well as different types of road surfaces, combine to make each race unique.
Game play begins with career mode; successfully complete tracks to unlock time trial mode, and complete a rally to unlock adrenaline mode.
As you race, your co-driver, with his soothing, lightly accented voice, guides you through the track, indicating upcoming turns and offering words of encouragement that sometimes give way to snarky exasperation. I found him entertaining, but he can be silenced in the options menu. Overall, the sounds are well done, with a rock-n-roll soundtrack, and realistic road sounds, all of which can be adjusted to your preferences.
The graphics are simply terrific, I really enjoyed the scenery and the different race locations. From charming English village, to Italian country-side, each race feels like a Top Gear episode. Damage to your car also appears in realistic 3-D as you race (well, if you race like I do, that is, and frequently go off the road).
After every couple races you have the opportunity to repair your car, and can choose to play a mini-game to help your crew be able to make more repairs. There are just three games, and they’re all quite elementary, but provide a nice break in the action.
Tips
1. Spend some time trying different control options, there are many different configurations, and it’s highly customizable, so find what works best for you.
2. Once you master the mini-games, use them to help repair your car.
Recommendation
I suspect that Rally Master Pro follows a lot of the typical rally racing games formulas, but it’s so detailed and polished and packed with action, I think it’s appeal goes far beyond just fans of the genre. It’s well worth it’s $4.99 selling price, now in the app store (U.S. only at this time, unfortunately)
