Manal AlAlem Kitchen offers a lot of different recipes for a wide range of meals. You can find recipes in this virtual cookbook for deserts, soups, appetizers, main dishes, salads, and side dishes. These six categories offer a pretty nice selection each of meals to prepare.

After clicking on any of the categories, you will be taken to an image of a meal in which you can click on the image to get the full recipe. This is one of the let downs of the app though. It isn’t very intuitive in the sense that it takes you to a meal you may not be interested in and it is hard to figure out how to scroll to another meal at first sight. There are small bottoms below the pictures that show you your position on the selection list. You can swipe with your finger to scroll between different meals.

The recipes are well-written and offer good instructions. There is the image of the meal presented in one window on the recipe screen, and icons showing various bits of information on the other side. These are helpful hints that show you the type of dish you are looking at; the amount of time it takes to cook it; and the amount of pieces it should be used to prepare. Below that is a list of ingridients you will need before starting to prepare and cook the meal. Lastly, underneath this list, when you scroll down you will see a numbered direction list showing you exactly what to do in the course of preparing the meal.

The app has a great use of imagery to show the way final meals look. The pictures are truly crisp and made me hungry, personally, just by looking at the meals. There is no other multimedia present, though, like videos.

Manal AlAlem is recommended for anyone looking to add new flavors to their diet or learn how to cook from the Arabic kitchen.
