Splashtop Review for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad

Compared to iOS devices, laptops are not so very portable, while desktop computers are practically rooted to the table. With Splashtop Remote Desktop by Splashtop, you can now access and use your computer no matter where you are, including to stream music and videos, etc.

Review
In order to use Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPhone & iPod and Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad, you’ll have to first download and install Splashtop Streamer on your desktop computer. This desktop software is available for both Mac and Windows systems. Once you’ve got everything installed, the app on your iDevice will automatically scan for your desktop computers (whichever ones you’ve installed Splashtop Streamer on).

Splashtop works most fluidly on your local network, but it can also let you connect to your computer through the internet. You will have to sign into Splashtop’s Internet Discovery (under settings) on both your iDevice and computer using a Google email account.

The app can channel all sounds from your desktop system to your iDevice, and if you choose to enable this feature, it will also mute your computer. It is through this that you can stream music, videos, and even play games. Music streams very smoothly. However, video streaming can sometimes slow down, and the sound may lag behind the video image. I guess this is to be expected especially for large files. Splashtop runs very well. I do wish it wouldn’t reduce the resolution of my desktop computer once it connects, but this doesn’t matter all that much since you will most likely not be at your computer in the first place. The main area that Splashtop is lacking is that dual displays are not supported. So anything that you may have on your second display will be inaccessible on your iDevice. If Splashtop could support dual displays (perhaps with a swipe gesture to switch screens), it will be close to perfect. At any rate, Splashtop Remote Desktop is probably the best app of its kind currently available.

Recommendation
Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPhone & iPod is currently available in the App Store for $0.99, while Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad can be purchased for $2.99. The app is highly recommended for anyone who wants to run software or stream media from their desktop computer on their iPhone or iPad.
