Cleartune – Chromatic Tuner is a universal app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. The app works not only as a full chromatic tuner but also as a pitch pipe or tone generator. It will identify musical notes via the built-in microphone of your iPhone and iPad, but for users of the 2nd or 3rd generation iPod Touch, you’ll have to plug in an external microphone.

The app offers practically everything a professional musician might want in a tuner. It allows you to calibrate the A4 frequency, save presets, and transpose instruments. You can also select the tuning temperament. The default is equal temperament. Other options include stretch tuned guitar, violin family, Pythagorean, Just intonation, minor thirds, Kirnberger III, Vallotti, early French, etc.

I found Cleartune to be very responsive and accurate. Due to the tuner’s sensitivity, the needle may sometimes jump back and forth so much that you may wish to increase the needle damping in the options. Cleartune performs just as well as the best physical chromatic tuners available, and better than some. It works on every single tone instrument that can be tuned. Since you’re more likely to be carrying your iPhone with you constantly, you won’t have to worry about forgetting your tuner the next time you need it.

Cleartune – Chromatic Tuner is most highly recommended to all sorts of musicians, including hobbyists, who need to tune their instruments. This universal app is currently available in the App Store for $3.99. I think it’ll be hard, if not impossible, to find a physical chromatic tuner for this price, especially with all the features Cleartune offers.
