2XL ATV Offroad Review for iPhone and iPod TouchAfter showing a sneak preview of their game late last month, 2XL Games, Inc. just released 2XL ATV Offroad in the App Store. What are our first impressions? Even more badass than 2XL Supercross!

Review

If you happened to get a whiff of 2XL Supercross earlier this summer, you would have been more than amazed at the graphics and gameplay that 2XL Games, Inc. have packed into the iPhone. Since the 3GS has even more processing power, 2XL remixed an awesome game once again.

The offroad racing game features 16 unique ATV Supercross and Outdoor Nationals tracks, 2 Freestyle levels, Career Mode with achievement system, Freestyle Mode with an associated score system, the ability to support Multiplayer options of up to 5 different friends over a WiFi network, live statistics system which can be found at live.2xlgames.com, player customization, ATV customization, and much more. 2XL of course did not forget their stunning high definition introductory video in the beginning (as well as some beautiful models), which helps you get amped up to play.

The Freestyle Mode was especially fun to play, where you can catch big air jumps and throw down combination moves to generate as many points as possible.

We were super impressed back in May with the graphics and animations of 2XL Supercross. The company did not fall short at all on ATV Offroad, offering stunning 3D graphics and animations that could be considered the best yet on the iPhone.

Even more important than the graphics are ATV Offroad’s controls. Having learned in the past on their Supercross game, 2XL made sure to integrate 8 preset control schemes with the ability to adjust tilt steering. Combined with each control scheme, ATV Offroad also includes a 1st and 3rd person camera view which help compliment your racing experience. The soundtracks within the game are also great and feature high energy rock music. One complaint I have though is the ability to save your volume control. Every time you load the application the volume begins at it’s highest level and I find myself having to turn it down every time.

Overall, 2XL ATV Offroad is an action packed offroad racing game for all ages with 3D graphics and animations that could be considered the best yet on the iPhone.

Recommendation

I would recommend this game to action sports fans of all ages, regardless of age. 2XL ATV Offroad sells for $7.99 and is available for both the iPhone and iPod Touch.

I'm a huge fan of ATV games on game consoles (brings back fond memories of riding my Yamaha Banshee in the desert), and I had the DirtMoto Racing Lite game on my iPhone. I was about to pull the trigger and buy it, but then I saw the announcement about 2XL's upcoming ATV game and waited until it was released. As soon as it came out, I spent the $8 to buy it. While they delivered on the graphics, the game play is just horrible. The tricks don't seem to do anything, controls are difficult, and it quickly became an app that I know that I probably won't be playing very often. The game also seems to slow down when there's a lot of CPU-intensive action going on. 2XL Supercross doesn't seem to have that issue, and the game play is slightly better.

After playing it for a few hours and being underwhelmed, I spent the $3 to buy DirtMoto Racing so I could play the additional levels. The graphics in that game are awesome as well, but more importantly, the game play is far superior. Steering is incredible… it just makes sense and seems natural. Earning boost makes sense, you're rewarded for stunts, and when you crash you can actually get back into the race quickly as opposed to always starting back in 8th place with 2XL ATV Offroad.

As you can tell in the above video, the game is quite boring to play without any music (which DirtMoto has and does well). When you crash in 2XL's game the audio gets old real quick. I'm hoping the developers have a major update quickly and improves the quality of this game. As is, I personally cannot recommend blowing $8 for it. If you're an ATV racing game fan, check out DirtMoto Racing from Resolution Interactive AB… plus it's on sale right now for $3.
