DieMonstersDie! Review For iPhone and iPod Touch

DMDMonsters and guns, oh my! Monster hunter Wolfgang and Transylvania have two things in common – they’re in this game. DieMonstersDie! by James Dailey is a new side scrolling game on the Apple App Store. The one catch? Wolfgang doesn’t scroll, the monsters come to him.

Review

The story is simiple here. Wolfgang is on a quest to stop any and all monsters from reaching him. To do this, he has a choice between five upgradeable weapons – chainsaw, Uzi, flamethrower, guided rocket launcher, and a laser gun. Each gun adds its own unique play style to the game. The more monsters that are killed, the more money is made, and more upgrades can be purchased. There are also three other upgradeable perks – rage, increased health and regeneration.

DieMonstersDie! has an unorthodox control scheme. Wolfgang doesn’t move, but the direction of the gun does by either touch or tilt. The touch controls work just OK, with a slider that moves left and right and points the direction of the gun either up or down. I didn’t have much luck with the tilt controls as they felt sloppy and and not precise at all. With the said, the game play does work, and with extended playtime, DieMonstersDie! becomes an iPhone App you may find yourself coming back to for that next high score.

DieMonstersDie! is OpenFeint enabled, adding to the enjoyment with achievements and leader-boards.

Art style wise, DieMonstersDie! feels just like fighting monsters on the set of Van Helsing. Two words: it works.

Recommendation

Overall, DieMonstersDie! by James Dailey comes off flawed in several ways. The largest downfall that keeps DieMonstersDie! from being better than par are the controls. There are several different directions the developer could have taken that would have worked much better. For $0.99 though, the game becomes quickly addicting, and a fun challenge to pick up and play when spare time is available.
