BioSub Review For iPhone and iPod Touch

If the name BioSub by Origin8 sounds like a game you’ve seen or played before – it’s not. BioSub doesn’t take place in an underwater city, nor are you battling an overwhelming amount of creeps. In fact, the only thing BioSub has in common with BioShock is the massive amounts of water both games take place in. BioShock… does anyone else think of it like I do when I see BioSub?

Review

BioSub is a physics puzzle game developed by Origin8 – developer of many other game titles on the Apple App Store. The concept of BioSub is simple; solve the underwater puzzle for each level, gaining an award of up to five points. The twist? You have to solve the underwater puzzle in 30 seconds or less. The quicker the task is completed, the higher the award is given.

Most of the levels are the same, but as you advance through the levels they become harder and more complex. Canisters of different colors, but with an even amount of each color are dispersed throughout each level with the common goal on each level to clear the canisters. Bumping like canisters of the same color clear the canisters. The quicker it’s done while doing as little damage as possible to the Bio Sub, the more awards you will be given on completion of the level. Advancing to newer and more difficult levels is based on the total amount of awards you’ve earned. Earn enough awards to advance through all 70 levels.

There are two ways to control the Bio Sub – using tilt with the accelerometer or by touch. The biggest thing to keep in mind when using the tilt controls is to make sure it’s calibrated. Calibrating your device is easy and available through the options. The touch controls also work well, but do take some getting used to.

BioSub uses the OpenFeint system to keep track of any achievements you receive in game through a single login name. This feature definitely keeps you coming back to BioSub, or any Origin8 game. The graphics and sound in BioSub aren’t going to keep you coming back – the physics and puzzle aspects are.

Recommendation

BioSub by Origin8 is a new game appearing on the Apple App Store with a $0.99 price point. If you’re the kind of person that gets easily addicted to puzzle games, BioSub might be the game for you. Overall, I think Origin8 has released some really great games, but I’m not sure I can add BioSub to that list. For $0.99 it’s still a steal and if you’re looking for more quality games from Origin8, please, don’t hesitate.
