BoomBrigade1Minigun, shotgun and bazooka – what’s your reinforcement of choice? Can’t choose? Well you better choose soon, because that castle on the right hand side… well, it’s being attacked. Boom Brigade by 10tons Ltd. is a new tower defense game worth taking a looking at for $0.99 on the Apple App store now.

Review
Boom Brigade is another of what’s probably hundreds of tower defense games now available on the Apple App Store. With the many tower defense games showing up on the App Store, game companies need to put a spin on the already popular genre. Boom Brigade puts an acceptable spin on the tower defense genre with movable towers that consist of three reinforcements you can choose from – minigun, shotgun and bazooka. These reinforcements are moveable units that are used to destroy the oncoming bugs and enemies from destroying the base.

Upon entering the game, you choose from one of the three enforcements. Each of the three units do different damage and have a different radius with their respective gun. The bazooka has the longest range with good damage, but reloads very slowly. The minigun has great range but does less damage than the bazooka, and the shotgun acts as the middle of the road unit with average radius and gun power. In my experience with the game, minigun was the overall easiest and most powerful unit to use with more than adequate range and power with the bazooka and shotgun lagging behind.

Boom Brigade is just like other tower defense games with the same kind of upgrade model of the units and base. Killing enemies drops money and health. The money drops help with the upgrade of your units and healing of a damaged base. The health drops are used to immediately heal any of the units that are damaged. It’s one of the defining characteristics of the genre, and it works.

The art direction and sound of Boom Brigade are great and added a lot of enjoyment to the game. The guns sound like they should and also add to the quality and enjoyment of the game.

Recommendation
Boom Brigade by 10tons Ltd. is a great tower defense game with fun playability. The biggest flaw with Boom Brigade is there’s no save feature. If you exit the game, the only option you get when launching the game again is to restart from the beginning. This is a huge flaw with any iPhone game and makes it hard to really recommend this game to everyone. If you’re really into tower defense games, for $0.99, it’s a good deal. For most, you may want to wait for an update to see if a save feature is added.
