Hungry and like to eat hamburgers? Well, you’re out of luck if you’re playing BurgerTime by Namco. Now, if hamburger building is your thing, BurgerTime is the only game that can fill your craving – for a little bit.
Review
A hot dog shop in a Hamburger town? That’s what Vinnie Vinegar wants to do to a young man and his Uncle. Vinnie Vinegar doesn’t like the delicious hamburgers they’re serving and plans to force the Uncle to sign an offer he can’t refuse. If he refuses, Vinnie Vinegar will send his cronies in to take care of him. This is where the young man steps in, builds hamburgers, and saves the day. That is if you plan to spend several hours doing so.
BurgerTime for the iPhone and iPod Touch is a remake of the 1982 arcade classic developed by Data East – a Japanese video game company. Many people in the states will most noticeably remember the port to the NES, where it made its 8-bit premier.
There’s only one mode in BurgerTime – story mode. Story mode takes you through a massive amount of levels that are all virtually the same, slowly increasing in difficulty. The goal is to stack a complete hamburger from the several different ingredients embedded inside the different floors throughout each level while avoiding other ingredients chasing you. Some of these ingredients include a fried egg, ham, hot dogs, carrots and lemons. Overall, it’s hilarious watching these ingredients chasing you while you avoid them by either smashing them with the hamburger ingredients, or spraying them with pepper that you pick up through the levels.
BurgerTimes’ controls work, but could use some improvement. The on screen D-pad works well while it’s on screen, but when it’s not being touched it disappears from the screen. There’s a problem with this; when you want to move again, you’re never 100% sure you’re going to click the right direction. There were several times I right instead of down, only to be stopped dead by an ingredient. The sound and graphics work really well for a mobile platform, and were my favorite part of BurgerTime.
Recommendation
BurgerTime by Namco is a great rendition of a classic arcade game. While missing depth and a sense of accomplishment because it is so simple, it’s a fun nostalgic experience. For $1.99, it’s not a great bargain, but will give you a fuzzy feeling if you remember the arcade edition.
