If you’re like me, there are two things in this world you can’t live without – castle defense games and zombies. With MonsterKill you get a fresh new way to defend your castle against zombies, vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein monsters. Sounds perfect? It is!
Review
MonsterKill, released by Origins8, is a castle defense game with a twist; it uses gesture-based actions in order to stop the enemies from destroying the fence you’re defending. There are three different game modes to keep the replay high – Normal, Endless and Onslaught. In Normal mode you defend yourself through 20 levels. Endless mode is just that, endless, and with Onslaught, the goal is to stop as many of the 101 monsters that that travel through the path. To do this there are four different spells, as well as magic regen, that are used and can be leveled as you progress through the game.
Dragging your finger in a lightning motion creates the lightning effect that shocks monsters and can chain to other monsters. The freeze effect, created by drawing an arrow faced down, creates an ice barrier to stop monsters. The fireball effect, created by drawing an arrow faced up, is a damage over time shot from above and the cut effect is a simple slash that kills regular zombies in a single hit. Each spell depletes the magic bar that you start with at the beginning of each level. Lastly, magic regen increases the amount of mana you regen when you’re not using one of the four different spells. Each of these offer their own strategy, and the gesture system works extremely well with them.
The graphics on MonsterKill are average, but the art style is fantastic with the sound reminding me of Halloween every time it’s fired up. There just isn’t another castle defense game with this kind of art direction and style.
Tips
1. Lightning anyone? The absolute best bang for your buck with this game is the lighting effect spell. When upgraded, the lighting effect chain becomes slightly overpowered and chains a larger distance than it probably should. Pair this with the freeze effect for a destructively good time.
2. More than anything, give this game more than a 15 minute chance. The different swipes are hard to get used to in the beginning, but become second nature after a couple games.
Recommendation
MonsterKill is a great choice if you’re at all interested in castle defense games. With the $0.99 price point and a developer that seemingly wants to improve its games through updates, MonsterKill is a must have for anyone looking to kill some time on an entertaining game on their mobile device. It sells for $0.99 and is available through the App Store right now.
