Spider – The Secret of Bryce Manor Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

Spider008I don’t suppose you’ve ever thought about the daily routines of a spider, and who would? Spiders are for swatting – Everyone knows that. But think about it. They are small, they are quiet, and sneaky. That’s how they creep up on you in the shower. It can also be useful for finding clues in old deserted houses, and to discover secrets of the past.

Review

The story of the game is that you are a spider who discovers a house and goes through the various rooms (levels) looking for secrets, to seek out the mystery of Bryce Manor. The main focus of each level is catching bugs to eat by forming webs, which is not the most fascinating of tasks. The secrets get VERY easy to find in each level. There is no story to follow as you find the clues, you just find it and – nothing.

The shining point of this app is the graphics, they are stunning. I have such a weakness for hand drawn art and these graphics blow you away. They are filled with charm and warmth, and it creates the feeling of history. Almost like it’s a dream sequence. I couldn’t get enough of it.

The music doesn’t intrude, but I felt that it could have added more mystery to the app. A quite fast paced “poppy” background track was used, and it doesn’t go with the game at all. I think a more classical background would have been more useful and added atmosphere.

You control the spider by dragging the screen where you want the spider to go as the spider clings to a surface, and you can flick to make the spider jump. This is where it gets fiddly. To make a web you tap the spider, then flick it in the direction you want an edge of the web and repeat so that all the sides meet. Sometimes the controls don’t work, they are very fiddly and not very responsive.

Recommendation

This app is very heavily lifted up by the graphics but let down by the gameplay. I would say that this app is probably worth it for the graphics. Available in the app store for $2.99
