Xenocade Review for iPhone and iPod Touch
Do you like tossing or rolling balls? In Xenocade by Digital Embryo Studios, you can try your hand at both bowling and skee-ball in a futuristic neon environment. You can also pit your bowling skills against a friend using just your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Xenocade is a casual game for the iPhone and iPod Touch that offers two games in one. Hyper Strike is an arcade bowling game, while Ultra Ramp will let you play skee-ball.
In Hyper Strike, each game consists of ten rounds of bowling, much like a traditional game of bowling. The main difference that sets this apart is the arcade-like luminescent colors of the bowling alley. Whenever you get a strike or a spare, you will be treated to a beautiful replay. Hyper Strike offers both a single player mode as well as a two-player mode in which players take turns at rolling the ball. On the other hand, Ultra Ramp only offers a single player mode. In this game, your objective is to toss the ball into the rings with the highest possible points. The nearest, easiest, and biggest ring your ball can land into will of course get you the lowest points for each toss, whereas the smaller and more distant rings, which are harder to aim for, will award you more points. At random, certain rings will light up with either a red or yellow glow. Landing your ball in a red ring will award you an extra ball, while getting into a yellow ring will double every ring’s points. You also have to be careful not to let your ball roll into the gutter.
The game’s 3D graphics are attractive, and the balls are simple to toss. You just have to tap them and slide them back before flicking them forward. However, I found aiming to be rather imprecise, especially for Ultra Ramp, which seemed to be heavily weighted toward luck rather than skill. As for Hyper Strike, it appears you can only make straight throws and it is impossible to toss any curved balls. Altogether, Xenocade works decently and allows you to fit two simple games into your pocket.
Xenocade is a casual arcade game available in the App Store for $0.99. Those who are fond of bowling and/or skee-ball should check it out.
