Gameloft Showcases Five Titles at PAX
Leading iPhone developer, Gameloft allowed Appmodo to get a sneak peak of their upcoming titles during the Penny Arcade Expo. The titles are diverse and are guaranteed to offer something for everyone!
Let’s start off with a nostalgic favorite – Earthworm Jim. Most recall numerous days and nights spent playing this action/platform game on their Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo as a worm who discovers a space suit that mutates him into a super hero. Gameloft brings this classic 1994 title to the iPhone and lets you battle the same enemies, Psy-Crow and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt in order to rescue Princess What’s-Her-Name.
The game features all the diverse and freaky play sequences you remember ranging from running, shooting, swinging on hooks with your worm head, launching cows, bungee jumping and rocket riding. There are 11 original environments that are divided into 19 levels, 12 enemies and 9 bosses such as Major Mucas, Chuck and Fifi, Bob the Killer Goldfish and more.
Switching gears onto a new title, the much anticipated Asphalt 5 was shown to us and definitely lives up to all the hype we’ve heard since the WWDC conference. The next sequel of Asphalt features polished graphics, a variety of beautifully rendered tracks and an enormous list of fully licensed cars including, Ferrari 599, Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 Super Veloce, Audi R8 and Ducati 1198 to name just a few. You’re even able to listen to your own iPod music as you careen through sharp turns and find shortcuts on tracks to sneak ahead.
I haven’t seen any full 3D arcade fighting games on the App Store, so I was quickly impressed with Gameloft’s upcoming title, Blades of Fury. I fired it up and loved the cinematic intro to the game that depicts one of the female characters battling Satan. Blades of Fury lets players choose from 10 different characters, each with their own weapon and fighting style. You unleash about 20 different attacks and combos by pressing the buttons on the right side of the screen. There are 10 unique arenas and you can play in either story, arcade, survival or practice modes. I synced up two devices via Bluetooth connection and was thrilled to see how flawlessly the multiplayer mode worked. In a matter of seconds, I was beating up my opponent for a full K.O. all while listening to Eye of the Tiger from the iPod library. (I thought it was a nice touch that we could access our own music during the game).
I also checked out Dungeon Hunter next, which is a fun hack and slash action RPG game. The game is set in a dark fantasy world where you embark on an epic quest as you uncover memories about terrible events and fight the evil queen who tyrannizes the kingdom. You create your own character by choosing his class (knight, rogue, mage), and evolve him as you gain experience, power and skills. Five fairies aid throughout the game and provide protection, special powers and advice. There are tons of items, weapons and armor to find, which will altar the look of your character. I was also surprised by the wide range of quests and missions offered. For RPG fans, Dungeon Hunter will enthrall you for hours if not days!
The last game I previewed was Shrek Kart, which is a fast paced, arcade kart game. You can play as your favorite fairy tale character, ranging from the Ginger Bread man to Puss in Boots and try one of the four modes: Quick Race, Challenge, Tournament and Arena modes. In fact, Shrek Kart is the only arcade kart game with a multiplayer arena mode! You explore familiar sights such as Shrek’s home in the swamp, the halls of Worcestershire High and the palm-lined streets of Far Far Away and can unleash special abilities and power-ups against opponents. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi multiplayer mode is also available along with iPod library access. With 15 tracks to choose from – all beautifully rendered in 3D, Shrek Kart is definitely one of the most exciting games coming to the App Store.
Gameloft says that all the titles will be available by the end of September. Based on my previews, I am sure they will garner significant attention from folks looking for a fun entertainment on their iPhone and iPod touch.
