Venture into a medieval world of adventure filled with fast-paced puzzles and daunting enemies. Puzzle Quest 2 by Namco Networks America Inc is a unique match-3 game wrapped within an expansive RPG environment. You can play as an assassin or sorcerer, barbarian or templar. With both your wits and quick reflexes, you’ll battle various enemies, matching assorted gems to harness their power and unleash at your enemy a combination of spells.

Puzzle Quest 2 is a universal game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Unlike most match-3 games, Puzzle Quest 2 will immerse you in an RPG adventure. Instead of slashing at your enemies with a physical sword, your quests and battles will take place in the form of puzzle games. Both you and your opponent will take turns at shifting the pieces on a board, until one of you is defeated.

Pieces within each match-3 game bear different shapes and symbols. Each piece carries with it a unique power. While the main means of doing damage to the enemy lies in matching skulls, matching other pieces such as variously colored gems will help you accumulate manna. This will in turn fuel your spell-casting ability. Different spells will require differing amounts of manna and varying numbers of colored gems. Spells that have been charged up and are ready for you to cast will flash. At this point, you can tap the spell to launch it against your enemy. Note that most enemies can also attack you in the same manner, so you’ll have to make strategic moves to thwart your enemy. Different enemy types also have their unique traits, strengths, and weaknesses. Whenever you win a match, you’ll be awarded several spoils of victory, including gold. You’ll also earn experience points and level up. During level-ups, you can upgrade your character’s skills and abilities. You will also automatically learn a new spell. Although the entire list of spells is long, you’ll only be able to bring up to five spells into battle with you.

A vast array of weapons and armor are available. These can aid you in battle and boost not only your attack and defensive ability but also enhance other aspects of your character. You may sometimes be rewarded with a choice of gear after a battle. Alternatively, you may make purchases whenever you find a shop. After you’ve collected enough materials, such as wood, metal, or leather, you can use them to craft new items or upgrade existing ones.

Puzzle Quest 2 has beautiful crisp graphics and simple tap-based controls. The in-game instructions make it easy for you to get into the game, and it is impossible for you to get lost since you’ll be moving from place to place by tapping the big green arrows that appear. Other game modes are also available in addition to the main story mode. These include seven mini-games, each of which slightly changes the style of match-3 gameplay, as well as a tournament mode in which you can choose your lineup of four fighters to pit against the AI in a single match-3 game. Altogether, Puzzle Quest 2, with its melding of puzzles and RPG, is a rich, entertaining game with excellent replay value.

When you make four or more matches you’ll get an additional turn. Also, some enemies receive more damage when certain gems are matched, so plan your moves strategically. Note: Puzzle Quest 2 is a huge game. You’ll probably require at least 1.2GB of free space to install it in your iPhone or iPod Touch, and likely yet more space on your iPad.

Puzzle Quest 2, currently available in the App Store for $9.99, is well recommended to fans of match-3 and RPG games. If you enjoy both types of games, this will be a treat!
