Pig Shot Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

Pigs are adorable critters, it seems. They feature in more than a few popular stories and games. Pig Shot, by Nexx Studio, has added yet another cute lil’ piggie to the fray. In this game, your objective is to fling a roly-poly pink pig down a grassy course, to pick up pig-faced stars and avoid obstacles.

Pig Shot is a casual pick-up-and-play game for the iPhone and iPod Touch in which you use slingshots to hurl a pig as far as he can get across a long green stretch of grass. Along the way, you have to tilt your device to maneuver the pig around various objects in his path and collect yellow stars that will give you extra points. If you hit any trees, bushes, haystacks, logs, fences, or roaming sheep even once, it’s game over. Rolling over water will slow you down, while going over speed-boost arrows will get you spurting ahead.

Other than the speed-boost arrows, the game features only one other power-up: gas-inducing cauliflowers. After you’ve gathered your first cauliflower, a gas meter will appear. Tap it to make your pig release a gaseous boost. But only when you really need to. Speed in itself isn’t critical in this game. Your pig only needs to make it from one slingshot to another. Be careful not to crash into the slingshot’s supporting posts.

Pig Shot has cute artwork and easy game controls. Tilt control is not overly sensitive, so with practice, you’ll eventually get the hang of it. The game is easily addictive, and you might find yourself trying again and again to best your previous score. As polished as the game already is, I personally would like to see more power-ups added in future updates, which would up the fun-factor. Perhaps a temporary invincibility power-up, such as a protective bubble shield?

Other than tilting to avoid trees and bushes, logs and fences, remember to avoid puddles of water, which will slow you down. If you find your pig crawling to a near stop and have already collected some cauliflower, tap on the gas to propel him. But be patient and don’t be too trigger-happy. Save the gas for when you really need it.

Pig Shot is well recommended to casual gamers and anyone who enjoys a pick-up-and-play game now and then. Through the OpenFeint leaderboards, you can challenge your friends for high scores. Pig Shot is currently available in the App Store for only $0.99.
