Lion Pride Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

Lion PrideLion Pride is a game of life, appealing to the strongest animal instinct that is common to all living things. It’s a fight for the lives of you and your family. Set against the colourful African plains and a few facts along the way, Lion Pride leaves you hungry for more.

 Review

The goal of the game is to make sure that you kill enough prey to feed your pride. Various animals wander onto your territory and it is your job as the lioness to stealthily attack your prey. As the levels progress the prey gets bigger and you need to organise up to 3 lionesses to bring it down. When you successfully kill an animal you increase the meter at the bottom of the screen, if this runs out then your cubs go hungry! Not a desirable situation to be in.

If you are concerned that it sounds pretty brutal, you soon get over that and get absorbed into the game. Although a major problem with this game is there is simply not enough of it, there are only 8 levels! There isn’t enough of the game for it to get challenging and it feels like there could be so much more added. I really hope that Blue Fang Games add more levels and bring the game to its full potential in future updates. Poachers could be something to add challenge to the game. A brilliant addition is the Fun Facts section, which gives you little known facts about the animals involved in the game. Did you know that Hippos fall asleep underwater and they can come up for air and don’t wake up?

Graphics is an area where this game definitely does not disappoint. Something that really hit me was the brightness of the colors, and the realism of the animals, yet it was kept cartoonish enough so that it doesn’t feel too real. The graphics are clean and smooth and you almost feel the African heat leaping out of your iPhone.

To control the lionesses you basically draw a virtual path where you want her to go. If you move your finger quickly you make her charge, and slower means she stalks the prey so that you don’t scare them off. You can also stun your prey which makes them easier to catch. It is difficult not to run all the time though especially as the levels progress. The controls are very intuitive, I could blame the game for not making the path where I wanted it to go but I feel it was my own failing that caused this!

The African soundtrack also does not disappoint! It’s a funky drumbeat that gets you in the hunting mood but watch how loud your volume is because if it’s too loud it starts to relentlessly peck on your head . It’s almost too good, because it distracts you whilst playing the game, however as long as you keep it low it creates a focused environment for you to hunt in. Luckily, and I praise Blue Fang Games immeasurably for this, they did not add any squealing noises or any kind of bloodletting sound effects. That would have changed the whole game and made it very, very bad. Instead there are just the normal noises that the animal would make and this adds to the atmosphere of the game.

Recommendation

I would recommend this game for most people but for those who seriously have strong feelings about eating meat and or are sensitive about virtually killing animals then you might want to give this one a miss, although in my opinion there is nothing particularly offensive or horrific about this game. It is handled very well. Its a great app but just gimme more!

Its available in the App Store right now for $0.99

Its a great game for 99cents and arguably one of the best line drawing games on iPhone. Better than Flight Control IMO.
