OpenFeint Updates Platform; SMS Invites, Cross-OS Interaction, New Leaderboards

OpenFeint, one of mobile gaming’s foremost social-gaming platforms, has updated its functionality with version 2.6. Users who play games running the new version will be able to recommend apps to friends via SMS from within the app. Even if your friends don’t have the same smartphone OS, you can text a recommendation and a link to the Apple App Store or Android Market.

Along with SMS invites, OpenFeint has a newly revamped leaderboard system. Now, with 35 million users, OpenFeint makes it easier to filter the leaderboard to find the lists that are most relevant for you.  You can filter rankings by week, month, and all-time.

It will be interesting to see how OpenFeint reacts to Apple’s GameCenter launch… whenever that happens.
