The original game by Debacle Software was great, but the new one by XMG Studios is even better! With two more worlds added to the original four, Little Metal Ball Gold is the perfect solution to a new kind of labyrinth game with awesome visuals, a realistic sense of depth, and fun game elements.
Review
When I first got Little Metal Ball from FreeAppADay, I was hooked. I completed the included 40 levels sadly regretting the hurry as there were no more left to play. Thankfully, XMG Studios released Little Metal Ball Gold, the same game as the original but with two additional words each with 10 levels.
Little Metal Ball Gold is a ball rolling game where you are trying to get to the exit of each level while avoiding falling off the edge and collecting as many of the stars you can get. Beating a level in the shortest amount of time is the optimal object.
Rolling the ball around is done simply by tilting your device in the direction you desire the ball to roll in. You can calibrate the controls to your preference, and everything is completely responsive. The game has a great sense of depth, so the developers through in the ability to jump onto higher platforms with the simple touch of your finger. Holding the screen longer will charge up the jump, making you travel higher.
All of the levels are presented in an easy to navigate menu and they’re categorized by the world that they’re in. Each world has 10 levels in it, with the first ones generally being a bit easier than the last ones that are more difficult. Each world also revolves around a certain them for the environment: a blue and mostly clear sky with green vines and other plant-life twined around the tree trunks that make up the platforms, an ice-age with platforms being made out of glaciers and rainbows in the background, a scorching hot lava pit, and many more. The visuals are always looking great and with top-notch finish easily being sorted into the category of perfect; they’re bright and you never have to doubt the texture that they’re made of.
The game has many different elements that you will encounter in every single level. Bumpers that can easily propel you off the edge of the platform if contact is made, elevators that will take you from one platform to another, super charged cannons, and micro ball makers that make the ball smaller and harder to navigate. The developers have cleverly crafted each and every level with care in combining all of these elements to make 60 levels that are both challenging and fun at the same time.
If there is one game that has kept me hooked for an extremely long time, it’s Little Metal Ball Gold with its many game elements in the many levels and the bright, colorful, and crisp artwork.
Hopefully, XMG Studios will be updating the game to enable the crisper artwork visible on the iPhone 4′s retina display! Also, I really hope that an iPad version of the game gets released soon; I don’t have an iPad, but people that do would enjoy the game a ton!
Tips
You really don’t need to collect that stars unless you have repeatedly been falling off the edge, and your time is almost draining. Also, if you don’t care about the type of medal you get, take your sweet time!
Recommendation
Not that you’re almost done reading my review of Little Metal Ball Gold, go buy it for only $2.99, and start rolling! You’ll be addicted as soon as you start playing and observing!
