RollOut App Review for iPhone and iPod Touch
A game with a cute and cuddly character, 50 levels, a new type of unique control scheme, along with different gaming mechanisms to make the game puzzling? I like it! This is exactly what you get when you purchase Bulkypix’s and Fishing Cactus’ new game, RollOut!
Review
In RollOut, you are trying to make Wabba, a cute, black and white animal, reach a portal that transfers him to the next level. Wabba moves by rolling forward and instantaneously becoming a spiky ball sort of character. You must use the new and innovative control scheme to cleverly make him reach the portal which is always a few platforms above the ground.
You can call the game a puzzle-platformer if you really wanted to; there are platforms that must be used to reach the portal, and your mind has to be utilized which automatically makes the game puzzling.
This “innovative” control scheme: what is it? Little circles with arrows inside of them move horizontally to the left at their own slow pace while Wabba rolls to the right. You swiping a finger across the screen moves the circular objects so you can position them where they’re needed. The circles are active when nothing is touching the screen and they deactivate when you place a finger on the screen. What exactly do these circles do? What is their purpose? When Wabba comes in contact with them, the direction that the arrow is pointing influences his movement. You mostly use upward-pointing arrows that make Wabba jump a small bit; these can be used to get him onto a higher platform or keep him airborne to avoid something that you don’t want.
Upward arrows aren’t the only kind of arrow you’ll face. There are arrows that speed up Wabba’s rolling and, while these are active over other arrows, they make green platforms solid for Wabba to jump on. There are also blue arrows that slow Wabba down and make blue platforms available.
Other game mechanics are in action throughout the 50 levels that each require you to use your brain in order to safely breeze past them or use them correctly to aid you on your path to the portal. All of the levels have a target time for completion. If you finish within the target, you earn a medal. This is the challenging part of the game, and it has its benefits if completed. However, it is not required. The beginning levels are fairly easy and they slowly increase in difficulty, although all are challenging.
The artwork and animations are simple, but top-notch. The thing that catches me the most, which is not usually the case is that the catchy, intriguing background music goes along with the premise of the game in some way.
I have to really give it to Bulkypix, the publisher, and Fishing Cactus, the developer, who both did a wonderful job with the game. My overall experience with it was an excellent one. The whole game was exciting, from the moment I started playing to the moments when newer challenges were added in the puzzle mix-up. I am addicted for the time being, and everyone that plays this game will undoubtedly be as well!
Tips
You really just have to adjust to the different control scheme and learn how to use it properly. Once I did this, the game was pretty straightforward.
Recommendation
The game is only $0.99, and for that price, it is a definite, no question, without doubt must-buy! It has elements of a platformer, a puzzler, and another genre that hasn’t been publicized yet (because of the unique control scheme).
