Review

In Stick Golf, you control a stick person (get it) through 6 different worlds with 9 holes placed in different environments. The premise is extremely simple: get the ball into the hole in the least amount of strokes possible, like golf. You can consider the game as a sort of mini-golf, but I like to think of it as “platform golfing” as there are many platforms that have to be navigated up and around to reach the hole.

The game is split up into 6 different world that each have to be unlocked after the one preceding it is completed. Like real mini-golf/golf, there is a “par” or the number of strokes that is the most you can get to get a good score on a level. So, for each level and for each world, there is a par. You must get an equal par or lower to the one specified on a world to unlock a new one. If you get more than par, you will not unlock anything. That’s why its important to try and get a par of less on each of the levels.

Controlling the 2-D stick man is the easiest thing you can possibly do in the game. Getting the ball to the whole correctly and accurately is the difficult part. Everything is controlled by on-screen controls. On the left side of the screen two arrows control the direction and the height at which the ball will be stroked. An arrow in front of the stick person will move up and down according to the way the buttons are pressed. A button on the right side of the screen displays the word “Go!”. This, when pressed, will activate the power bar right above it. Tapping the button again will hit the ball.

Along the way to the holes, you will encounter tons of blockages and problems. Your ball might land in the water/lava, you could hit in sand at a bad angle, or you could already be at a wrong angle. These are what makes the game fun because if you mess up there’s no way that you can restart that particular level without first restarting the world from the beginning. That’s why it’s imperative that you pay attention the whole time while thinking ahead of the game and staying there.

The graphics are just something that really catches your eyes. I don’t know why, but just the way that they’re made just draws you in. Each environment (previously called world) has a different theme of colors and backgrounds. You might have a dessert with cacti in the back, or a funky town with purple and yellow terrain. It’s just what makes the game so highly attractive.

Once you finish all of the holes, you can actually go back and do them again as there are two difficulties. Why can you do them again? Most games don’t really add anything when they have multiple difficulties, but Stick Golf adds a something worthwhile. The easy difficulty is simple old golf while the hard one puts in the wind factor adding to the list of things to be aware of. You can actually play in the hard difficulty whenever, but you’ll have to be extremely awesome at the game to do so.

Sadly, when you quit the app, you’re progress goes away so if you’re doing really well on a difficult world you have to stay and finish. This is the only downfall to the game, and I hope that the developers address it soon!

Overall, Stick Golf should keep you occupied for a long time. The game is both challenging, and addicting while it adds awesome artwork to the picture which is a bonus. I think the reason I’m hooked is because of the simplistic idea executed so well and flawlessly! The game is actually on my dock, because I’m starting to use it more than Safari. All I can say is that I love it!

Tips

I can guarantee you that you won’t be able to finish any of the worlds on your first try except the first one. So you can observe the different courses and keep on playing until you can good at them.

Recommendation

9 times 6 equals 54. What is that number? The amount of courses provided to you. Then if you double that because of the two difficulties, you get 108. That’s a whole bunch of content for only $0.99 Yup, that’s right $0.99. The developers over at Noodlecake Games really knew how to hit my addiction spot with the exciting gameplay, awesome artwork, and tons of content. The game comes highly recommended to everyone! Buy it and play; you’ll be attached!

If I had to rate the game out of 5 stars, it would without doubt receive a 5 with flying colors!
