Alien Invaders Review for the iPhone and iPod Touch
Ever wonder what Space Invaders and Galaga combined would look like in the new millenium? Free for a limited time only at the iTunes App Store, StormBASIC Games’ Alien Invaders takes full advantage of the iPhone’s power and brings you an updated look of the 80s space shooter games, with a twist.
Starting up Alien Invaders, you are greeted by a cool video, as the aliens emerge from their mothership to begin their invasion. Your character is a robot very similar to a Transformer character, where you appear out of nowhere and jump on top of one of the alien ships. blowing it up. Thus begins your mission, as your planet’s only hope to thwart off the impending attack.
There are 3 difficulty levels in this game: Easy, Normal and Hard with options to include selections between having music on or off, and game control preferences including the use of a Virtual Pad or the accelerometer, Touch & Tilt.
Gameplay is very simple, with your character located at the bottom of the screen with swarms of aliens on top, all lined up in formation. The object of the game is to dodge their lasers by moving side to side and firing at the enemy by tapping to shoot.
Sounds just like the old video games, right? Yes and No. The premise is the same but the game itself has been updated with fluid 3D graphics, the ability to shoot the aliens (your enemy), and are rewarded with gold coins which allow you to level up different abilities like a gun, additional speed, stronger shield and armor while working your way through 20 different levels.
Alien Invaders has impressive graphics with fluid 3D renderings that give the game a nice, futuristic feel. Gameplay is smooth and solid, however I did get a bit frustrated using the accelerometer, as its response was too slow for me. I would like to see a few improvements on the next update, such as a save game button and the option for multiplayer support.
1) Armor upgrade will slow you down, so choose your upgrades wisely
2) Be careful, once you lose your power ups (new upgrades) in the later stages of the game, it will be extremely difficult to get them back
Alien Invaders is just as addicting as those games we loved to play back in the 80s. We’ve certainly come a long ways from the time of bitmapped characters with music that resembled the theme from Jaws. I would recommend trying this out, as this game will keep you entertained for hours and at just the right price – FREE. So why not give it a shot? Literally.
