This whole week, since it came out, Fruit Ninja, developed by Halfbrick Studios, has been my number one priority. I wonder why ninjas hate fruits so much?
Review
Fruit Ninja is a casual game developed and sold by Halfbrick Studios in which you have to destroy as much fruit as you can with a unique way of doing so.
You play as a ninja, who hates fruit as stated by the game’s tagline, and slice fruit in half to receive points. Fruit will continuously fly into the screen from beneath whether they’re by themselves or amidst many other mouthwatering (I have to mention) fruits. Your job is to slide your finger across the fruits to split them in half and right back down with their color stain being the only thing left behind as a splat on the wall. Hence points are added to your total.
There would be no point in always slicing fruit as the game would go one forever so something to avoid sometimes flies up into the screen among other fruits. Realistically animated bombs will come into the screen sometimes and they cannot be sliced if you don’t want the game to end. If they are however swiped across, a big explosion will take place and a game over message will occupy the space of the screen.
Along with the bombs, there is also another way to face that dreadful message that you hate coming onto your screen. If you miss three fruits by not slicing them, and they exit the screen your game will end. So your fingers always have to be ready to quickly slice if there is a fruit that you missed because it came up in a gigantic group of other fruits.
The fruits ranging from strawberries to kiwis actually make me drool with their realistic shape, color, and texture. On strawberries you can see the little seeds which supports my point: they look real! The animations are very nicely put together and the sounds are ear candy with the constant slicing. I also admire the full slicing theme that can be seen almost everywhere like selecting an option in the menu.
Even though Fruit Ninja can keep you occupied, it can actually bore you at some points. The shallow gameplay with only one game mode really subtracts from the enticing elements of the game. The good news is that the developers already have major updates planned. Looks like they’re going to have a fun time further developing the game!
From everything that’s included from the unique interface and controls, the OpenFeint achievements and leaderboards, and the addictive gameplay, Fruit Ninja’s got me wanting to be a full time fruit chopping ninja!
Tips
What I have found to be easy is to not slice every fruit that comes to the screen individually unless it is by itself. When they come in a group, use one big slice to cut through all of them at once.
Recommendation
Fruit Ninja really delivers everything that a successful game should have, and I expect to see it in the top chart soon. Grab it for only $0.99 and start chopping fruit today!
