Giant Moto App Review for iPhone and iPod Touch
Giant Moto takes iPhone motocross racing to the next level with it’s highly detailed 3D graphics, physics engine, and killer racing system!
Review
Giant Moto is a 3D arcade racing game in which you control motorbikes. Races are not the typical type of race, but instead are a sideways scrolling motocross kind of race. The gameplay takes place in several different tracks in two different modes.
Many on-screen buttons and the accelerometer control your motorbike. There aren’t buttons that are displayed right and left because the perspective is different than a normal car racing game, so up and down arrows control the sideways movement. The acceleration button does just that at a standard speed while a boost button besides it gives your bike an extra boost of speed when pressed. Tilting your iPhone or iPod Touch while your bike is in mid-air rotates your bike to land at more useful angles than you would have landed without rotating. The controls buttons are a little hard to use as they’re small so your fingers will miss them often and they can sometimes confuse you.
Each track contains ramps, boost arrows, and other obstacles. The ramps propel you into the air where you can tilt your iDevice to find the proper landing angle or start a wheelie once you reach the ground. The boost arrows, if driven over, will give your bike a little bit of additional speed.
When you start up the app, only two sub-menus are available from the main menu: Options and Race. The race sub-menu takes you to a screen in which you set up a race. In this screen you can select which track you want to race at: there are 6 different tracks that have varied terrain. The first one is a simple track with almost no ramps or obstacles while the sixth is filled with jumps and other things that could essentially slow you down. A blueprint of the track is shown below this option that displays peaks which resemble ramps. Under that you can pick between a solo mode or versus mode. In the solo mode you race against time and versus mode is where you race against 3 other computer AI. Under this you can pick the color of your bike.
The graphics are bright and the 3D is rendered well. They are like those of any motocross game but there’s just something about the game that really hooks you in and keeps you playing even though there are so few gameplay options.
Overall, Giant Moto is a fun game that has potential to reach the top of the charts, but I feel that more game modes need to be added like a Career mode, and a multiplayer mode. The developers could also incorporate some tricks that could earn you OpenFeint achievements if OpenFeint was added.
Tips
You should play solo mode as much as you can before playing against other opponents for you to assure victory. The game is a little bit hard when you first buy it, but you’ll get better once you receive more experience.
Recommendation
If you have ever played motocross games, Giant Moto will not disappoint you. The simple thing that this game provides is that it’s fun! There’s no other way to describe it!
