Monster Trucks NitroI originally blogged about Monster Trucks Nitro at the beginning of April at our pickup truck news website, Truckblog.com and finally decided to write a review about the highly talked about iPhone game.

Created by RedLynx Ltd, Monster Trucks Nitro is a monster truck racing game that originated from the PC & Mac platforms and has finally made its way onto the Apple iPhone.

Review

Monster Trucks Nitro takes you through 8 challenging racing tracks which include famous tracks like “The Loop”, “The Gap” and “The Nitromus Oximus”. The game features medal achievement capabilities (Gold, Silver and Bronze levels) which help you unlock other levels and trucks. You have the choice of three trucks to start the game off with and 2 un-lockable vehicles. Each monster truck reacts differently to the environment and has it’s own flexible suspension, huge wheels, and individual weight.

There are intense physics involved within the game, where the trucks interact with their environment. Some of those objects include other vehicles, oil drums, lead pipes, and more. Controlling the monster trucks is very easy: you have a throttle button, brake and cruise control. Monster Trucks Nitro also uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to pitch the truck backwards or forwards at any time. Graphics for the game are excellent, showing highly rendered three dimensional objects and a surrounding environment. I also did not experience any lag while playing.

The music sound track is energetic and the sound effects of Monster Trucks Nitro are very realistic where you can hear the rumble and roar of the trucks. The game’s volume controls also reflect the iPhone’s volume and silence all options.  Monster Trucks Nitro also features gesture camera controls which offer a far camera, near camera, and cool pro camera option that gives you a professional birds-eye view of the monter truck.

Overall, Monster Trucks Nitro is very fun monster truck racing game with excellent three dimensional graphics, challenging game play, and an awesome physics environment.

Tips

1. Mash the throttle. You’re in a timed race and every second counts. Mash the throttle continuously to make it to the finish line the fastest.

2. Lift the front end. I found that leaning the iPhone slightly backwards and keeping the front end lifted of the monster truck helped glide through impacts and bumps faster and launch off ramps higher.

Recommendation

I recommend this game for all ages including children. Monster Trucks Nitro is an intuitive game that anyone can enjoy, especially monster truck lovers. The only thing that I can recommend to the developers to make this game even better is to add more levels onto the 8 that currently exist. The game currently is on sale for $0.99 so jump on over to the app store and cash in on the limited offer!
