If you are like me you usually are very protective of your iPhone. You want the protection of shock absorbency of a silicone case, but you want the style of a hard case. Your case has arrived. The CandyShell which is designed by Speck, a large player in the case market, has been able to make a hybrid between a hard case and a silicone case.

Review

The second you take your Speck case out of the shipping box you are amazed! When you look at the box, it has two buttons at the top, it really does make opening a Speck case a wonderful experience. Opening the box you will find your case, a screen protecter, a cleaning cloth, and a squeegie. Putting on the case is very simple, put your iPhone on one edge then snap the other side on. Removing the case is where the trouble starts. You must push very hard at a top corner. This might seem like it would break the case luckily, the case is very flexible. With the case being very hard to take off, but isn’t that a good thing? You would want a case that will firmly protect your iPhone and not fall off. I would definitely count this as a plus to the case, unlike many other people. Speck has even provided a guide on how to take off your case here. They even have a video here.

The case’s specs are (Length: 2.75in, Width: 0.75in, Height: 4.75in, Weight: 2.3oz), when you compare these to the iPhone’s Weight: 4.8oz (unable to compare to other measurements due to the way measurements were taken by companies),you can tell when the case is on the 3GS and 3G the weight is more than half the amount on both iPhones.

The case uses the hard shell on the outside to prevent dirt, and to easily slip the case in your pocket. While the silicone on the inside keeps your iPhone safe when it falls. The case has fallen from my pocket, while sitting down, and when the case drops it wobbles for a few seconds until it reaches a steady position. When I put the case down on a table it seems very soft and does wobble, due to the silicone. The first time I put my iPhone face down, I was scared because I realized, the case was not covering any part of the screen. I quickly picked the case back up to find that there was a buffer between the table and the screen. Speck has really done a great job at addressing this problem.

When looking at the back of the case an engraved Speck logo stating the company name is visible. After using the case I have seemed to notice that dust particles stick to the logo, and must be wiped out. Now there are usually just a few but it is something to note if you keep your phone in a dusty area. The vibrate button does take longer than usual to make sure it is in the right position. I usually put my hand in my pocket to change the vibration. Now I must take my phone out of my pocket to clarify that it is in the right position. The ridge is angled properly though to limit the amount of dirt that comes in.

The volume rocker and the standby buttons are sometimes unresponsive, or do not provide enough feedback when pushing the button. The first few days when using the case, this was really annoying but later I was able to get used to it. I also like how the buttons are built into the case, as other cases have ones where they are not and the buttons fall off.

The headphone jack is easily accesible and holds the headphones tightly in place. I can see where there could be a problem if you use headphones other than the Apple one’s, but I have always sticked with the Apple ones. The dock connecter can be easily plugged into by just the wire but, all of my docks have been unsuccessful at plugging in. The camera is perfectly aligned with the case and would cause no disturbance in taking pictures.

The Speck CandyShell has the same feel as a bare iPhone, which most people like. Except the Speck CandyShell provides more of a grip than a bare iPhone. I have heard overtime that the case will start collecting fingerprints, if you go with a lighter color you should be perfectly fine. I was not able to see any scratches or fingerprints in my white version.

Overall, the Speck CandyShell is the perfect case for me. I am all about protecting my iPhone at all cost. It provides some great features which cannot be matched by other cases. As of now the Speck CandyShell will be my permeant case. This case really shows Speck’s creativity of products.

The Speck CandyShell comes in thirteen different colors, BatWing Black (Black), Pink/Purple, AquaBerry Blue(Light Blue), WaxStick White(Grayish), JamJar Purple(Purple), SourApple Green(Bright Green), CinnaRibbon Red(Red), SeaGlass Blue(Very Light Blue), IndiGlow Blue(Regular Blue), DarkHeart Black(Pink and Black), JuJuJulep Green(Dark Green), and NightShade Purple(Maroon). The colors that Speck provides, really adds to the case’s great features.

The Speck CandyShell is just $34.95 and is worth every penny of it. (Link takes you to product page)

Recommendation

I recommend this case to anyone who really cares about their iPhone, but do not want a the style of a silicone case.

I recommend this case to anyone who cannot make up their mind between cases.

I recommend this case to people who love the color possibilities.

I recommend this case to people who like the way the iPhone’s casing feels, but does not want to get it dirty.

I do not recommend this case to people who dock their phone a lot, or people who like removing their case.

WARNING: The case may look tasty, please do not eat it! Appmodo nor Speck will be responsible if you do! :)
