While Palm has warned Pre users in the past that the iTunes functionality could disappear at any time, the speed with which Apple as plugged up the hole in iTunes syncing programming is much more rapid than most expected. Released this morning, the patch notes for iTunes Update 8.2.1 states that it “provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.”
I would call it more adding Apple device verification, more so than “addressing an issue” with it. While this leaves Palm Pre users high and dry in regards to a quick and easy way to upload and sync music onto their devices, Apple’s response to the compatibility of a competitor’s device on their own software is not surprising. As the Palm Pre has been gaining momentum and a wider user base, Apple is examining every option in terms of taking the power away from competing smartphone companies. While this update does change things for the Palm Pre in terms of music syncing, it far from disables a user’s ability to put music on their Pre.
