E-Books, iTunes App Store’s Largest Category

The Guardian, citing a report from mobile advertising company Mobclix, said that e-books have more apps than any other kind of app in the App Store including games.

Mobclix identified 27,000 e-book apps, compared to 25,400 games. One thing to keep in mind, standalone e-book apps are simpler to create than games. Also, the current trend to make custom apps on a book-by-book basis is tiresome; for instance, some book apps allow you adjust font size, or colors, or lock the screen’s orientation, but with there’s little consistency.

Although apps like Kindle for iPhone and Stanza haven’t dented the onslaught of standalone e-book apps, maybe Apple’s iBookstore for the iPad will finally do the trick.
