He’s tall, furry, wears a tall, red and white-striped hat and carries an umbrella. Can you guess who this famous children’s book character is? If you guessed The Cat from Dr. Seuss’s book The Cat in the Hat, you’re absolutely right. Thanks to Oceanhouse Media, this popular children’s book is now available for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Review
The Cat in the Hat is a wonderfully rendered e-book tale about a cat’s crazy antics as he entertains two kids one rainy day while their mother is out of the house. The book’s illustrations are presently exactly as I remembered them growing up. By taking full advantage of the iPhone’s platform, it also comes complete with professional narration, whimsical background audio and best of all, interactivity.
There are two ways to read the book. You can choose to have the book “Read to Me” so you can sit back, listen and follow the words as they are highlighted and read to you or opt to go the traditional way and “Read it Myself”.
The e-book’s use of pan and zoom method keeps the story fresh and alive as the camera zooms in on the beautiful drawings before panning out to the rest of the page. The best features of all is the The Cat in the Hat’s inviting way to get you to touch and get involved with the book. You can touch any of the photos on the screen and the words associated with it will jump off the page and is read aloud to you.
Recommendation
The Cat in the Hat for iPhone and iPod Touch comes highly recommended to readers of all ages. It is both entertaining and a great way to promote literacy. It is available now at the iTunes App Store for $3.99.
