Vocab U is a challenging word puzzle game for all you wordsmiths out there. A clever combination of word scramble and vocabulary test, Vocab U is simple to play, but will give your brain quite a workout.

Review

Created by Obo Games, Vocab U consists of five levels, each with ten words to solve. Each of those ten words is created with letters from one longer word for the duration of the level.

To start, you’re given a definition, a grid which tells you how many letters are in the word, and the scramble word, which is the source of letters you’ll need to solve this portion of the puzzle. Drag the letters into position within the grid, and if you’re correct, you’ll move on to the next word. If you find yourself stumped, you can move on to other words in the level by tapping the arrow icons to the left or right. If you need a little more help, you can get more definitions, or letter hints. These will cost you points, however, so use them sparingly.

Graphically, the game is just basic and simple, but the focus is on the words, so it’s not a huge negative. There’s not much in the way of sounds, but you can choose to play music from your iPod. With a library of 250, 000 words, you’ll be able to play over and over, and never see the same word twice.

You can play untimed, or add to the challenge by trying to beat the clock. You also have the option to share your smarts by posting your scores on facebook and twitter.

I thought I had a pretty good vocabulary, but Vocab U had me stumped a few times, and I had to get a few hints.

Recommendation

If you like word games, Vocab U is fun and challenging, and just $1.99 in the app store.
