Saltwater aquariums have always been a favorite of mine. As beautiful as the fish may seem, without proper water chemistry, you’ll simply end up killing all your fish. With MyReef 3D Aquarium for iPhone and iPod Touch, you can enjoy three virtual saltwater tanks of your very own without all the hassle.
Review
MyReef 3D Aquarium allows you to set up three amazingly lifelike aquariums, customizing every aspect of each tank’s setup. You will need to select the background, gravel, decorations and ultimately, the tank’s inhabitants. There are 21 different types of saltwater fish to choose from. If this is all too much for you, the app has an auto button that will automatically select the tank’s interior design, the fish that will live in, or both if you prefer.
The aquarium is best viewed from landscape mode; however you also have the option for portrait mode. Tapping the bottom part of the screen in landscape mode (or tapping on left side of the screen in portrait mode) will buttons to control the fish camera, auto camera, knocking, feeding, lighting and swapping aquariums, and the setup. The fish camera (Cam F) allows you to select a fish for the camera to follow, auto camera (Cam A) automatically pans around the entire aquarium, knock allows you to knock on the glass, tapping on the feed button will activate feeding your fish by double tapping on the screen, light switches the lighting on or off and swap will let you view one of the three aquariums. In Setup, you can select the tanks’ interior, fish, including the device’s orientation, volume, bubbles on/off and the built in iPod control buttons to play the current playlist.
MyReef 3D Aquarium uses OpenGL graphics and brings the tanks to life. The fish look incredibly real, especially by the way they move. Lighting effects are fantastic, as the light casts its shine on the tank with the water movement, right down to the blue filter effect on the entire screen when the light is turned off. The only sound added is the bubble effect which is quite soothing and toned down. As I mentioned before, you can play your current playlist from your iPod collection if you prefer.
This app is not a game; in fact, it falls under the entertainment category. Your fish will not get angry if you tap on the glass too much or die if you don’t feed it. It is merely about looking at something pretty to relax to and to keep the stress away. I would have to add, this app really does a great job in doing so. All I can say is, when can I add a Lionfish to my tank?
Recommendation
MyReef 3D Aquarium is recommended to saltwater fish lovers everywhere. It is the most realistic aquarium app we’ve tested thus far. It delivers what it promises, providing gorgeous eye candy that fits in your pocket. My Reef 3D Aquarium is available now at the iTunes App Store for $2.99. If you would like a sample of this app, there is a MyReef 3D Aquarium Lite that you can also download for free.
