Project 72 Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

Earlier this month, Appmodo broke the news about 4 boys from Venice Beach who had set out on a mission to create a successful iPhone game from start to finish in only 72 hours. The stage was set and you were given a firsthand invitation to witness their journey by logging onto their website at Dogtown Studios. On January 25th, their game, Project 72 for iPhone and iPod Touch was released by the iTunes App Store for public consumption.

Review
In Project 72, your mission is to propel your red rocket ship as deeply into space as you possibly can. Given only a limited supply, you will need to use the ship’s radar to help you find collectibles such as Jet Fuel; to keep your ship moving, Shield; to protect you from collisions, and Nitro; to give your ship’s rate of travel a boost.

There are four obstacles to watch out for. Repetitive collisions with asteroids and satellites will degrade your ship’s hull which will ultimately lead to your demise, therefore limit as much contact with these two as you possibly can. Direct contact with the other two however, must be avoided at all cost. These come by way of UFOs, who will blow you to smithereens if you’re not careful and the infamous Black Hole which will suck you in with no hope of getting out.

Played in the same fashion as Doodle Jump, you get one ship to get as far into outer space as you can using the device’s accelerometer, which by the way, is quite responsive, to dodge obstacles and pick up the much needed collectibles along the way. I was quite amazed and surprised by the high quality of work put into the game’s design, given the short amount of time they had to work with. To match Project 72′s visually pleasing design, the boys also managed to round it all out by providing a great soundtrack and game sounds that suits the space theme to a tee.

Options also include settings to turn the music and sound effects on or off, a help button to inform you of your mission, along with photos of all the collectibles and obstacles you will find on the game. There is also a Score button which will show your best score along with a growing number of Project 72’s highest scorers. The game requires no online scoring set up. Simply play, type in your name and you’re done.

If these boys were able to produce such a stylish and addicting game in 3 days time out of a simple concept, just imagine what they are capable of when they’re not under that kind of time restraint! Great job guys, well done!

Recommendation
Project 72 for iPhone and iPod Touch comes recommended to everyone. If you are a Doodle Jump fan, you’ll surely enjoy this game. A game that was well thought out in its design, coupled with integrated no-fuss online scoring, Project 72 has indeed accomplished what they set out to do; to create a successful iPhone app. Pick your copy now at the iTunes Store for $.99.

I really like the concept behind the creation of this app and am impressed with the quality that the team came up with. Based on my own experiences jumping into app development, there are so many little things that go along with development that you really don't think about — icon development, the background images and sounds and music all can take time. It does really become obvious that you either need to have expertise in many areas of have three friends to help you out. Thanks for getting this story story out there.
