SongSketch Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

I’m not much of a musician. I have a piano that’s dusted more often than it’s played, and a mandolin on which I can strum no more than three chords. Still, I love music and harbor fantasies of writing the next big single. SongSketch is just the app to help me with that lofty goal.

Review

SongSketch is an app created by Joao Moreno, made to help songwriters jot down song ideas on the go. The app opens to a library, where all your songs are stored. Start a new one by tapping the plus sign. From there you can type in a title and lyrics.

Tap the Add Recording field to record anything, instrumentation, voice, any ideas you have. You can add multiple recordings to this section.

Next is the Chords field. A spinning selector lets you choose the chords and keys. A slider is available to keep track of the number of plays per chord. Add as many chords as you’d like, and add multiple chord groups to the song’s main page.

There’s even an additional section for notes if you want to jot down more ideas. The only drawback I see is that you can only type in portrait mode, not landscape, but that’s a minor fix.

The interface is minimal and elegantly uncluttered. Simplicity is SongSketch’s biggest strength, and definitely has a less is more approach.

I’m not a songwriter, but I think this little app has just about everything you’d need to be able to keep track of all those song ideas whenever and wherever inspiration strikes.

Recommendation

For musicians wanting to get their ideas down quickly, it’s a great little app for $1.99 in the app store.
