Sadly, there is no built-in camera, but they do have accessories such as an external keyboard dock. The 30-pin connector does mention “The dock has a rear 30-pin connector, which lets you connect to an electrical outlet using a USB Power Adapter, sync to your computer, and use accessories like the Camera Connection Kit,” however this is for importing photos and video, not capturing it. Apple Launches iPad
Magical & Revolutionary Device at an Unbelievable Price
SAN FRANCISCO—January 27, 2010—Apple® today introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. iPad’s responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch™ display lets users physically interact with applications and content. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds— thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.
“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
iPad features 12 next-generation Multi-Touch applications. Every app works in both portrait and landscape, automatically animating between views as the user rotates iPad in any direction. The precise Multi-Touch interface makes surfing the web on iPad an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. Reading and sending email is fun and easy on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard. Import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. Watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD or flip through pages of an e-book you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.
iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. The iTunes® Store gives you access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video. Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.
Apple also introduced a new version of iWork® for iPad, the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. With Pages®, Keynote® and Numbers® you can create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions and formulas. The three apps will be available separately through the App Store for $9.99 each.
iPad syncs with iTunes just like the iPhone and iPod touch, using the standard Apple 30-pin to USB cable, so you can sync all of your contacts, photos, music, movies, TV shows, applications and more from your Mac or PC. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.
iPad’s brilliant 9.7-inch, LED-backlit display features IPS technology to deliver crisp, clear images and consistent color with an ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angle. The highly precise, capacitive Multi-Touch display is amazingly accurate and responsive whether scrolling web pages or playing games. The intelligent soft keyboard pioneered on iPhone takes advantage of iPad’s larger display to offer an almost full-size soft keyboard. iPad also connects to the new iPad Keyboard Dock with a full-size traditional keyboard.
iPad is powered by A4, Apple’s next-generation system-on-a-chip. Designed by Apple, the new A4 chip provides exceptional processor and graphics performance along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.* Apple’s advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging technology deliver up to 1,000 charge cycles without a significant decrease in battery capacity over a typical five year lifespan.**
iPad comes in two versions—one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G. iPad includes the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the 3G versions support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA networks. Apple and AT&T announced breakthrough 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad with easy, on-device activation and management.
Continuing Apple’s dedication to designing and creating environmentally responsible products, each iPad enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy-efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.
Apple today released a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPad, so developers can create amazing new applications designed to take advantage of iPad’s capabilities. The SDK includes a simulator that lets developers test and debug their iPad apps on a Mac, and also lets developers create Universal Applications that run on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
Pricing & Availability
iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. International pricing and worldwide availability will be announced at a later date. iBookstore will be available in the US at launch.
*Apple tested wireless battery life by browsing web pages and receiving email over an AirPort® network, never letting the system go to sleep during the test, and keeping the display at half brightness. This is a typical scenario of use on the go, resulting in a battery performance number that is very relevant to mobile users.
**A properly maintained iPad battery is designed to retain 80 percent or more of its original capacity during a lifespan of up to 1,000 recharge cycles. Battery life and charge cycles vary by use and settings.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

love it!
looks intense
It's not as cool looking as I thought it would be… just looks like an enlarged iPod Touch. Still, I'll probably get one!
Also, no camera? That's disappointing…
Looks like apple screwed up again. Microsoft and HP have already announced a tablet pc 24hours prior to this debacle of an “Ipad”.
Just as microsoft is taking over the gaming industry with their triumphant XBOX360, which is destroying both ninteno wii and sony ps3 in sales week after week, apple is once again destined to fail with this “e-reader” …because that’s all that it is, nothing more than an overpriced E-Reader. (with AT&T coverage hahahah)
Apple flubs again….next time name your project “The Windows 7″…maybe you would actually SELL one, hahahahahaha! ([ PC ])
Form Factor sucks! Devices are going smaller. This will be good device for business people but I don't see it exploding on the public. Only saving grace is the price. People will be tempted to buy so they can say they own one. I predict many will be collecting dust in the near future.
I would like to have an ipad and replace my computer. Can I install software of MicOffice, turbotax, itunes and other programs??
There is plenty of 3G coverage in Idaho.
I have to say, I am pretty disappointed with this product, its like a big iphone with less features. What a let down and I am a big Apple fan.
I agree with most of you. What a waste of time and money by Apple. I've been a loyal Apple customer as a graphic designer and this is the biggest disappointment I ever had over an Apple product. Do you think that I'm going to spend $500 to buy and read books?? And the base price only comes with Wi-Fi?? And you have to pay for the Data if you get the one with 3G?? What's going on Apple?? What's wrong with a MacBook converted to a touch screen running Mac OS X and maybe a phone capability? Now that's money and time well spent… Good luck selling this one!
don't get me wrong, Apple did it again! But c'mon they could do better than naming it "iPad"
I agree. They could've named it something other than iPad. Of course, iTablet is out of the question, after all tablets are fully functioning computers, which obviously the iPad is not.
Why would Apple continue using a 3G service that is not available from Minneapolis to Washington state. Absolutely no coverage through the Dakota's, Montana, and Idaho. Deal breaker for many people I think.
aaaaaaahhhh!!!! looks amazing. I'll take two, please! one for the house, one for the car.
Deal breaker for what, 50 people? The bigger issue is AT&T's problems in major metropolitan areas. If the iPhone sucks bandwidth, think how much this thing will.
1 and a half pounds! Wow! Is it something your supposed to carry arround? Certainly not in your pocket I guess. It does look like and oversized iPod Touch
Has anyone actually stopped to consider exactly HOW they're gunna use this thing ?
I mean, if it's meant to be a 'hand-held', you're down to one hand to navigate – which'll presumably, have to be swapped once the supporting arm gets tired from nursing the device.
And when both arms are tired and fed up, you'll have to find somewhere to rest it in the near-flat position … hardly practical in the majority of mobile situations.
I mean, has Apple actually thought this one through yet ?
Touchscreens bigger than 5" simply aren't practical or agreeable to use.
First big mistake by Jobs here.
It may not bomb, but an iPhone it will not be.
And for what it's worth, I think "iPad" is the perfect title … think bigger iPod.
What Jobs should have done is added a 5" iPhone to the line up.
You PC lovers enjoy hating on Macs for no apparent reason. Watch how many of these sell and what how awesome the updated revamp versions of this will be in a year. It takes Apple say… a year to improve their products according to their dedicated followings suggestions and it takes Microsoft how long to update the Vista and all it is is a repackaged version of XP? Straight out Mac>PC period and the iPad will be a huge success
This thing belongs in a novelty shop next to the over-sized TV remotes and the fake puke. This is the iPod Touch for the elderly. lol!
you guys are all such assholes. the product is revolutionary and cheap, also there is an apple version of all the microsoft office applications. i used to be a pc person, hate mac and everything until i actually got an iphone and a macbook. every product mac comes out with is just so much more personizable and useful than the other pc products. as a student in technology, this is a very exciting product and even comes with a keyboard.
and to you who say no one but business people are going to use this, uhh college kids? all the morons in the humanities take their notes on tiny netbooks; i see this replacing netbooks in the futue
I personally think this will be a fun product.
as they say, no pain, no gain.
if people don't like this product, you know Apple will try they're damnest to edit it and fix it so people would enjoy it.
Plus, I'm with imakemoremoneythanu; students will LOVE this. Saves us paper money along with medical bills for the carpel tunnel syndrome we'll most likely have by the time we're middle aged.
I think Apple's having fun with their products. They're just 'going with the flow'
Plus, if the iPad does bomb, it'll be ok. iPhone and iPod sales will most likely keep them afloat
I disagree with all you PC people because Mac computers/gadgets are the better in line to a PC because there are practically no viruses and the computer start up time is WAY faster and shutdown time is also way faster! if only some one would actually come out with the status on the Mac VS. PC in programming and startup and shutdown times and application launches and stress tests and stuff you would clearly see a a diffrence in time to do tasks.
Also if you think about it how much money did you pay for you protable DVD players 10 years ago? like $300 or so well for $200 more you can get a mini computer in your hands that is way bigger and has a longer battery life and storage for movies for instance it would be well worth the money to own one if you do traveling and or just want one.
And honestly what would be the next item you cannot really think of it cause Apple just made it the iPad. so before you just put down the iPad and Apple come up with a better idea for technology. and at a pound and a half it is nearly nothing you arms will not get tired unless your gonna lug it around for more than 8 hours i mean honestly!
Quite interesting, well I just wanted some songs and got your blog. Thanks for this one mate
I just loved it. An additional comment or feedback which I would like to give is that this theme is quite boring and you need to work on it but everything else I fine.
