Rail Adventures Review for iPhone and iPod Touch

In a mine scene reminiscent of Indiana Jones’ Temple of Doom, it is up to you to escape this monster-filled cavern in Rail Adventures for iPhone and iPod Touch. Take a mine cart along an old abandoned railway and shoot your way out in this new 3D adventure by Esosyphen Studios.

Review
In Rail Adventures, an ancient curse has frozen everything on the mountain and will have you riding an old mine cart as a means of escape from this evil curse before it’s too late. The mountain is filled with skeletons, monsters, zombies and other scary creatures. As you begin your escape, your cart’s speed quickly picks up and out from the shadows, monsters suddenly to appear on your path. You are armed with nothing but two guns and a limited amount of ammo. So you must pay attention to your surroundings and quickly pick up objects along the way which also includes health and ammo boxes to replenish your supply.

The game is divided into five different levels. To advance, you must achieve 85% in kills, picked up enough gold bars and have avoided the majority of the obstacles. To unlock the final stage and complete your goal, you will need to raise your average to at least 90% in order to escape the mountain.

Game controls are pretty straightforward. To the left of the screen, you have a button that interchanges between Grab and Jump; depending on what action is called for at the moment. Hit the Grab button to pick up items along the way and use the Jump button to jump over boxes and other obstacles that are blocking your path. At the bottom of the screen lies your Brake button. Since the cart moves on its own, all you’ll need to worry about is when to use the Brake button to slow down the cart before you hit objects that can play havoc with your health bar. To your right is the Fire button. Targeting is automatic however make sure to fire sparingly as you have a limited amount of ammunition.

Repetitive as it may be, Rail Adventures’ 3D graphics looks great as you make your way through the mountain’s endless tunnels. The added background music reminds me of those old action/adventure epics which works well to provide that fast-moving, adrenaline rush feel that is well suited to this game.

Personally, I would’ve preferred more levels added to the game instead of having to repeat the same levels over and over again in order to achieve a high percentage score before moving on. Going through the same scenery becomes tiresome and boring after a while.
